Nightingale on the Nile: Go with the Flo!

Just been told - via Twitter - that a statute of the English nurse, writer and statistician Florence Nightingale - know as 'The Lady with the Lamp' - has been found in a hospital in Tahta, near Sohag, Egypt. In 1849, she took a trip up the Nile and visited Luxor and Cairo. That's all I really know about her. Does anybody know anything else about her travels? Please comment below.

Has anybody read A Winter on the Nile: Florence Nightingale, Gustave Flaubert and the Temptations of Egypt, by Anthony Sattin?

  2. There was a book of her travel letters from Egypt published a couple of decades ago. It was quite a beautiful publication, illustrated with paintings from David Roberts: LETTERS FROM EGYPT: A JOURNEY ON THE NILE, 1849-1850
Another source of information on her trip to Egypt is FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE IN EGYPT AND GREECE: HER DIARY AND "VISIONS" by Michael D. Calabria

You could also try a newer book: 'WINTER ON THE NILE: FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, GUSTAVE FLAUBERT AND THE TEMPTATIONS OF EGYPT' by Anthony Sattin
It's reviewed by the Telegraph here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/7771524/Winter-on-the-Nile-Florence-Nightingale-Gustave-Flaubert-and-the-Temptations-of-Egypt-by-Anthony-Sattin-review.html

Finally, you can compare her trip with that of Amelia Edwards and others by reading Joan Rees' book WOMEN ON THE NILE: WRITINGS OF HARRIET MARTINEAU, FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, AND AMELIA EDWARDS.

There's a nice bibliography of all kinds of books for Florence Nightingale at this site at this site: http://www.countryjoe.com/nightingale/reading.htm
