The third phase of the Grand Egyptian Museum comes step closer

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Committee will start reviewing the bids for the construction of the museum's third phase tomorrow.

The third phase of the Museum, which, overlooks the Giza Plateau, includes the construction of the museum’s main exhibition halls, which will display 100,000 ancient Egyptian artefacts.

The companies bidding come from Spain, Brussels, Italy and Egypt.

The opening of the museum is set for March 2015.

Grand Egyptian Museum: final construction phase starts later this year

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Egypt has received a grant of LE300 million ($50.4 million) loan from the Japanese Government for completion of the final phase.

Work will begin in mid-November 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2015. The museum will occupy a 50-acre site and will feature a translucent stone wall that will be 800m long. The wall will rise to 40m, allowing visitors to explore the sheltered space.

The main building will house the museum and a conference centre, connected by a large shaded courtyard and a exhibition space with 800-seat auditorium. The new building will house a restaurant, ticketing facilities and other services.

The museum will feature 100,000 artifacts with the government to spend $100 million on storage rooms and a renovation centre.

Hawass: Grand Egyptian Museum will be inaugurated on 15 March 2015

The Grand Egyptian Museum will be inaugurated on 15 March 2015 at its new headquarters on the Cairo-Alexandria Road, Minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawass said. The museum is expected to receive 5 million tourists annually, with an average of 15,000 tourists a day.

Grand Egyptian Museum - opening in 2013?


Rumours are that the new $US 550 million Grand Egyptian Museum will be finished and open by 2013. For a glimpse of what can be expected see the video above.

The Museum, near the the Giza pyramids, will display 50,000 objects, including the funerary objects of Tutankhamun.

There will also be - and this is very important - a 7,000 square metre commercial area with shops, cafeterias, restaurants, leisure and recreational activities, as well as a 250 seat cinema.

Egyptology and Exhibition Team for the Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum is seeking a team of Egyptologists to review and oversee the scenario and write exhibition text in six levels for the Grand Egyptian Museum. The team will be composed of a Senior Egyptologist, who will have final approval over the text, and two Junior Egyptologists, who will work under the supervision of the Senior Egyptologist. The entire team will work under the direction of Dr Zahi Hawass, and will be based in the Secretariat in Zamalek.
