Guess the obelisk: the answer

Thank you to all those who took part in the Guess the Obelisk competition. The obelisk is actually in the beautiful walled Italian city of Urbino in the in the Marche region.

It was taken from Sais, Egypt, had had been originally errected in about 580 BC and taken to Rome in the year 90 AD. It was later transferred to Urbino in 1737 and placed at the beginning of the Renaissance Square, next to the Ducale Palace and in front of the Church of San Domenico.

Congratulations to Russell in The Netherlands who correctly identified the obelisk.

  1. I'm basking in the glow of my righteous self-satisfaction and will continue to do so for the rest of the day. Would much prefer a prize, though. Maybe next time... :-)

  2. I will consider a prize next time. Perhaps a subscription some magazine produced by the world's foremost publishing house.
